So your GIS operations are not optimal.  It’s not an uncommon situation.

Sometimes it isn’t just the system, or just the data — it is a combination of many intertwined aspects that involve not only the systems and the data you have in place as your “GIS”, but the people, their processes, expectations, and priorities.

In order for an organization to have a successful geographic information system (GIS) implementation, the organization’s top leadership must champion GIS within the organization.  A champion in place can support the optimal use of geospatial technology and location-based information across the organization so that the functionality allows the system to do what GIS does best – utilize and visualize information in the geospatial context.

This is where the true value of your GIS enters the picture.

However, when your GIS has somehow degraded and is not performing optimally… It is time to reach out for help.

Often when GIS operations are beginning to unravel, organizations find themselves having one GIS “emergency” after another.  This creates a great deal of stress and confusion.  People in this situation often, quite simply, do not know where to start.  We have helped organizations improve their GIS “status” to enable them to understand how to optimize their GIS operations.

We complete a “triage” first.

We define what’s causing the most pain, categorize the areas, and make the list of what needs further, more detailed examination.

We then deep dive into each segment identified in the triage.

We work with your people who manage and operate your GIS, to engage with all stakeholders to learn about what does and does not function well for them when they are using GIS.

We may recommend changes in people-organization, processes and workflows, and/or systems components.

After our thorough review, we develop a report of our findings and review our recommendations with you and optionally, your stakeholders (this is preferred).  You and your organization take the next steps to follow our recommendations.  If extra help is needed, we discuss those next steps and where we can jump in to help with optimization.

We may suggest some other activities such as data clean-up, data consolidation, and application rationalization across your organization.

The most effective use of GIS is when people share data across an organization at the same time, enabling those who have specialty data to highlight it, and enable others to learn about its value.  GIS is not only a 2D, but also a 3D and space-time enabled system designed to give people visualization of data in the geospatial context – whether it is in maps, applications. dashboards or other interfaces.

People can use GIS in the office, on the go, or disconnected – but optimized data synchronization and validation is extremely important to enable everyone within an organization to trust the data such that it can be used to make good decisions and do great work.

Sometimes training is needed to help your team get up to date in how to keep your GIS in top running condition – or help your users work in the right applications to get their jobs done more efficiently.

Our training partners have decades of experience teaching GIS and related tools and coding languages – they speak GIS and can teach you how to be fluent in it as well.  They have a wide range of classroom training offerings as well as offering customized training if needed, onsite or nearby your office.  Contact us and we will be happy to put you in touch with them!

Let us know if you need an introduction to some of the best and brightest trainers around!

What is most important is to act early – not wait – as we have learned over and over again, these problems do not resolve themselves.  Please reach out to us to have a conversation to explore what you can do towards optimizing your GIS.
